When did Bungalows become so popular? 20 years ago, I was calling them ranches as bungalow was not a positive term. Now, however, seems like bungalow equals cute!

The definition of an American Bungalow is a 1 or 1.5 story with a dormer and a covered front porch, more square than rectangular, and for the most part built between 1910 and 1960.

In St Louis, the term has come to mean a one story built before 1960, under 1200 square feet. They were typically brick and squarish, 2BR 1 bath, hardwood floors, rarely a 2 car garage unless built later in the back. Older ones (pre 1945) had the skinny side face the street due to narrow lots, and later models had the wider side out. These morphed into ranches in the 1960s. These 1.5 story styles are usually called Arts and Crafts or Craftsman in STL.  I have sold numerous bungalows, built from 1920s to 1950s in U City, South City, Affton, Lemay, Oakland, and Woodson Terrace. Let's Go Bungalow!
